How to Care for a Trailing Ficus

    • 1). Plant trailing ficus in a container filled with a peat-based commercial potting soil. Squeeze a handful of the potting soil in the palm of your hand. If the soil packs tightly, add a bit more peat moss or some perlite to ensure that the soil will be aerated and will drain well. Use a container with good bottom drainage.

    • 2). Place trailing ficus in bright sunlight, but avoid direct sunlight, which will be too hot. Trailing ficus will do well placed 3 to 4 feet away from a bright window or near a window covered with a sheer curtain.

    • 3). Feed trailing ficus every other week during spring and summer, using a water-soluble fertilizer for indoor plants. Don't fertilize trailing ficus during fall and winter.

    • 4). Keep the soil evenly moist at all times. Unlike regular ficus, trailing ficus shouldn't be allowed to dry out between waterings.

    • 5). Keep the plant's leaves clean by wiping them occasionally with a soft cloth, as dust will prevent air circulation to the leaves and also block sunlight. Trailing ficus will also benefit from an occasional misting during the summer. Use a spray bottle filled with warm water.
