The truth is out about Maya (Karla Mosley) on The Bold and the Beautiful. She was born a man. But so far, only her sister Nicole (Reign Edwards) knows the truth. Maya hasn't said anything to Rick (Jacob Young) and that has to be bad news for their relationship. Rick has been bragging to anyone who would listen -- Katie (Heather Tom), Eric (John McCook), Caroline (Linsey Godfrey) -- that he and Maya have no secrets from each other.
So not only will he be disappointed when he finds out that Maya isn't the woman that he put on a pedestal, he will be shocked by the nature of the revelation.
Transgender characters have become more common on TV and in the movies, so it isn't a surprise that a daytime drama would want to tell a story. After all, daytime drama is all about relationships and the things that make us human.
USA Today spoke with Mosley, who has played Forrester Creations' lead model for more than two years, and she admitted she was as surprised as the rest of us when she learned what Maya's deep-dark secret would be.
"My first reaction was surprise, because 10 or 20 years ago, this is not a story we would be telling, and not in a way that's truthful and not sensational," Mosley told the newspaper. "My second reaction was, 'Thank you.' It's a gift. It's a privilege.' It's a real opportunity to educate our viewers here and all over the world."
The Bold and the Beautiful's executive producer and head writer Bradley Bell also spoke to USA Today, about his decision to write the transgender storyline, saying, ""It is about people respecting other people's differences and their uniqueness.
In the end, we all want to be loved, and in order to love someone else you first have to love yourself. If you are transgender, gay, straight, it doesn't matter. It's about finding love in life. This is a love story."
To make the new storyline work some of Maya's backstory has to be reworked, so on Tuesday's episode of The Bold and the Beautiful, Maya explained to her sister Nicole that the daughter that she lost wasn't actually her biological daughter. Rather, it was the daughter of a man she had been involved with, who go into trouble, so she because the girl's guardian. The girl was later killed in a car accident.
