- 1). Place 50-gallon oil drums against an inside wall of the greenhouse, where they'll receive the most sun exposure every day. Don't let them touch the outer wall, as that will leach their warmth, but do allow multiple drums to touch each other. Calculate the number of oil drums for your greenhouse using the calculation that it will take 2 gallons of water to heat 1 square foot of greenhouse space.
- 2). Gather natural spring water to fill your oil drums, using buckets to transport the water from the spring to the drums. Using natural spring water cuts on costs for your greenhouse, and leads to a more organic gardening experience. Fill each oil drum to the brim, and monitor the water level; over time you'll need to replenish the water in the drums as it evaporates.
- 3). Supplement oil drums with other organic heating ideas; caulk the greenhouse to seal any cracks, use bubble wrap on the windows for homemade insulation and pile rocks in the greenhouse to soak up and store heat.
