    Health Effects of Melamine Consumption

    • Direct effects of melamine have not been performed on humans. However, animal study data may be referenced to show adverse health effects. In animals, melamine causes bladder stones. Cyanuric acid may also be present in melamine powder, and when combined, the two may form a crystal that can give cause kdiney stones. Blockage of the small tubes of the kidneys may also result and stop urine production, kidney failure results, and possible death. Animals have also experienced carcinogenic effects.

    Signs of Melamine Poisoning

    • Signs and symptoms of melamine poisoning are little or no urine, blood in urine, irritability, signs of kidney infection and high blood pressure.

    Food Products

    Treatment for Melamine Kidney Stones and Kidney Failure

    • Depending on the severity of the condition, patients may receive urine alkalinisatin and,infusion of fluids, haemodalysis or peritoneal dialysis, correction of acid-base disturbance and electrolyte , or surgery may be performed to remove the kidney stones.
