- The Mustang's first appearance on a race track was as an exhibition car at the 1962 U.S. Grand Prix Formula One race in Watkins Glen, New York. The car driven that day by Dan Gurney was actually a prototype.
- A Mustang graced the track in the 1964 Indianapolis 500, but as the pace car rather than a race participant.
- When the Mustang did get a chance to race, the model took first and second place in the 1964 Tour de France rally.
- In 1965, 10 Mustang A/FX cars were built for the National Hot Rod Association's Factory Experimental race. Five of these 10 cars qualified for the race and 1 went on to win the race.
- 1969 Mustang Boss 302
After many victories at both race tracks and drag strips, a Mustang Boss 302, Boss 429 and 428 Mach 1 were taken to the Bonneville Salt Flats in 1969 in search of speed records. Drivers Danny Ongais, Ray Brock and Bob Ottum gathered no less than 295 records, all of which were certified by the United States Auto Club. - The Mustang has not yet finished making racing history. Mustangs will compete in NASCAR competitions for the first time in 2010.
