The weightage given to a "thali" in our culture

We are a country known for its authentic food and the combinations that we use to bring out the different flavours of our culture. This includes all the necessary spices, masalas and herbs are the elements that make each dish stand out separately from the other. The balance of flavours emerges from the style of cooking and the amount of time that is spent in it. It is no wonder why Indian food has slowly become so popular among other parts of the world too with many Indian restaurants opening there.

Thali forms a very important part of our Indian food culture. Thali basically means a plate that is made up of many dishes. The thali is often considered a fulfilling experience for the food that is served. The different dishes make for some really exciting flavours and will truly be a foodie's delight. Some of the components of a thali would include flat breads called naan or chapatti or even puris. The curries, starters and kebabs make for other parts of a thali but depending on the cuisine that you have ordered for. There is a different thali with different dishes served according to the thali that you have ordered – in this you have a Gujarati Thali, a Punjabi Thali, a South Indian thali and much more.

With more and more thali restaurants getting popular these days they have started many innovative thalis like including sea food thali. This is a tactic to give even non vegetarian food lovers a chance to enjoy the thali meal. A number of chutneys and gravies are a part of this meal too. And of course how can one ignore the sweets or mithai as we call it that are served or eaten at the end. Sweets are made out of a mixture of milk, lots of ghee and a number of dry fruits along with sugar to create a rich culinary experience. There is also a glass of buttermilk or lassi served at the end or at the start.

Thali restaurants must make sure that the customer is completely stuffed at the end of the meal. Some restaurants even serve unlimited meals where the waiters will keep serving till the customer has had his/her fill.

It is no wonder that why Indian thali restaurants are often the talk of the town. There are many popular outlets today and many small hotels that have made this an important part of their routine menu. The reason is clear – it is because of its popularity and the demand of a customer. Compared to ordering all the dishes separately and probably ending up spending more, the customer can delight himself to a variety in a limited amount of money with a little of all the dishes. Creating an essence of the Indian food culture and creating the right dishes is always something every Indian food lover will crave for. All as a customer you will need is a big appetite and the love to eat the proper Indian meal.
