How to Choose Your Yoga Style

Physically fit or otherwise, choosing a fitness routine that suits your age, health conditions and lifestyle is quite important for your complete well-being. Each person has a unique set of requirements when it comes to learning yoga. The ancient scriptures state that there exists about 84,000 asanas in Yoga. There are hundreds of ways to create an entire sequence of Yoga that can be customized to a particular need or condition. So, either you're a beginner or an experienced Yogi, you can always find what works for you better by exploring different Yoga styles.

Every style of Yoga has its own benefits and a few pain points, too. You can always get valuable guidance from your Yoga guru on which Yoga style fits you the best.

Here is a list of few Yoga styles to try to make you feel healthy and hearty:

Yoga for Beginners:

Are you taking your baby steps with yoga? Then, you should opt for a beginner's class in Yoga. The advantage in a beginner's class is that the Yoga teacher (guru) takes time to break down the fundamental poses like Downward-Facing Dog which usually poses some problems to students who are in their early days of Yoga.

Also, you'll get to practice the basics of pranayama and meditation which leads to greater spiritual realization when you progress to more advanced stages of Yoga. So, don't overlook the goodness of a beginner's Yoga class even though you're athletic and supple to start with other forms of Yoga. Always begin from the basics to get a better understanding of the art of Yoga.

Vinyasa Yoga:

Vinyasa yoga classes connect every physical posture or asana with your breathing pattern.

- It integrates sun salutations along with standing and balancing postures.
- Every yoga sequence takes it cue movements in time with inhalations and exhalations for a smooth and rhythmic flow.
- The style is free-flowing, similar to a dance form in nature. Also, for the same reason you should need to be more familiar with basic yoga asanas to benefit from its pace.

Power Yoga:

Power Yoga generally refers to a more athletic, strength-based form of vinyasa yoga. Most power yoga classes are heated to an optimal temperature, but not always. The style originated from the Ashtanga method of Yoga. Though it offers outstanding workout routine closer to that of a gym, it focuses less on the basic principles of yoga philosophy like breathing patterns and mediation.

Restorative Yoga:

If you choose to care less about workouts and more about relaxing your mind, body and soul then Restorative Yoga is a good choice. It focuses mainly on different aspects of Yoga that instil peace of mind.

- This style of Yoga makes use of several props including bolsters, eye pillows, blankets and a dark room.
- Every restorative class moves you into a state of deep, conscious relaxation, holding each pose for about 10 minutes or more.

It is ideal for people who are greatly stressed out owing to their lifestyle and work schedules.

As a matter of fact, every Yoga guru makes use of different styles of Yoga in their own way as part of their classes to kill the boredom and get the most out of each session for their students. So, you can always find a certain degree of modification for every special need that you have such as a recovery from injury or any other reason. All that you have to do is communicate your medical history or any other health-related concerns to your Yoga guru before you sign up for the yoga classes.
