The Best Way to Keep a Weedy Area Clear

    • 1). Treat the area with a weed killer. Weed-killer chemicals typically come in spray form. Take caution with usage and follow directions carefully, noting the quantity to use and other safety concerns. Some weed solutions use both a weed killer and prevention, and offer a quick and easy way to kill weeds. If you prefer to use a natural solution, try pouring hot boiling water, salt or vinegar on your weedy area. These methods are safe and worth a try if you cannot afford or have safety concerns about a store-bought product.

    • 2). Hand-pull the weeds from the area often to stay on top of weeds before they get too large to remove with ease. Use garden gloves and pull weeds out by the root. If you do not get the root, you run the risk of the weed returning and spreading. Use a small shovel to dig to get to the root if it is deep in the dirt. If your garden area is large, you may need to use a hoe for digging out roots.

    • 3). Cover the growing area with landscaping fabric. Landscaping fabric smothers any existing weeds and does not allow enough air, moisture and sunlight for new weeds to thrive. The amount of fabric you need depends on the size of the weedy area. You may have to replace the fabric seasonally or less often, depending on the materials and quality of the fabric, but it allows the area to remain significantly clearer of weeds. Keep in mind that the fabric may tear, allowing weeds to poke through, especially if you have digging dogs or critters in your yard.

    • 4). Mulch the area after removing the weeds. Mulch wood chips protect the ground from weeds and return moisture to your plants. Using the proper quantity of mulch and replacing mulch as it dries out helps contain the weeds in your lawn or garden. Ask for help at your garden center in determining the quantity of mulch needed.

    • 5). Plant other flowers, bushes and trees in a weedy area, as the more planting you do, the less space there is for the weeds to root. Plants take the much-needed moisture and space that weeds require to thrive. In addition, you'll have a much more attractive lawn and garden, adding to your curb appeal and enjoyment of the area.
