What is Prebiotic?

The word prebiotic is new to our english vocabulary, being first coined around 1995 by a couple of leading researchers named Gibson and Roberfroid, of the food biosciences field. At that time their exact definition in answer to the question "what is prebiotic" was - "Non-digestible food ingredients that beneficially affect the host by selectively stimulating the growth and/or activity of one or a limited number of bacteria in the colon, and thus improve host health".

In simpler words, prebiotics are the soluble fibers that can benefit our intestinal bacteria in a way that our health is improved. Since soluble fiber does not get digested in our digestive tract, it ends up in the colon where it ferments, and that's how it contributes to the well-being of our colon. Once there, the fermentation process produces short-chained fatty acids that have the ability to stop dangerous pathogen bacteria from forming into cells along the colon wall. If it is allowed to do so, these cells could later become cancerous polyps, and that would be very bad.

Where do we get prebiotics from?

Prebiotics are natural occurring nutrients found in foods such as wholegrains, fruits, and vegetables. This is generally known as the carbohydrate food group. Prebiotics work closely with the beneficial bacteria in your gut, feeding and supporting it so much growth and reproduction can happen and maintain good digestive health.

Unfortunately most of us living the American dream and eating a horrible diet made up of mostly processed foods high in saturated fats and sugar, lack these needed nutrients and ultimately many suffer digestive disorders, ranging from constant gas and bloating to constipation, diarrhea and IBS, and inflammatory bowel disease.

 Even colon cancer, which is sad because professionals tell us it;s the easiest type of cancer to prevent. It can totally be prevented by the diet you decide to eat. Remembering that ancient but constant advise - eat your vegetables, or an apple a day etc. These still make a lot of sense because there is much truth to them.
