- 1). Light some kindling at the very front of the stove. Allow it to catch fire and begin to spread.
- 2). Add more kindling until the flame gets going. Then add some firewood or coals, whichever you want to use.
- 3). Push the wood or coals slowly towards the back. Add more wood or coals, wait for it to catch on fire, then push it a little further back.
- 4). Continue alternating adding wood or coals and pushing the burning mass towards the back of the stove.
- 5). Check the temperature of the oven using the thermometer. It should be 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit, which is enough to keep the walls of the stove warm and properly cook whatever you want to make in the oven.
- 6). Push all the wood or coals to the back, then start cooking. If you are using the oven to bake bread, take a damp mop and run it across the floor of the oven. You can also spread a thin layer of cornmeal across the damp oven floor if you are baking bread. This will allow you to bake the bread directly on the oven floor.
