- 1). Take the cane outdoors. Wash the steel even if it already appears clean. Eliminate unseen oils from the cane using a degreaser. Rinse the cane using a water hose; dry the steel using a towel.
- 2). Affix tape to the portions of the cane you'd like left unpainted such as the handle and the floor grips. Be sure the tape you use is low-tack, or adhesive residue may remain on the surface after removal. Set the cane on a thick drop cloth.
- 3). Coat one side of the cane with spray etching primer. Avoid runs and sags by employing the proper application technique: Maintain 8 inches between the steel cane and the spray can. Wait one hour; flip the cane over and prime the other side.
- 4). Let the cane dry for three hours. Paint the cane the same way you primed it. Latex paint won't remain durable on a steel cane. For a lasting finish, apply a spray enamel.
