- 1). Remove and set aside the lid and cooking grate. Pour enough natural lump charcoal into the grill to completely cover the charcoal grate with a single layer of coal.
- 2). Open all grill vents on the underside of the kettle wide for maximum air flow into the grill.
- 3). Gather the charcoal into a mound in the center of the grate, and bury the electric starter iron in the center of the coal before plugging in the device. Allow the starter to remain in the charcoal for about eight minutes, until the coal begins to smoke and crackle.
- 4). Use the charcoal starter iron to shift coals around inside the grill for either direct or indirect grilling setups.
- 5). Place the lid back on the grill and adjust lid vents to achieve desired temperature inside the kettle. Wider vents mean more oxygen enters the grilling chamber, boosting temperatures. Narrower vents restrict oxygen to the heat source, causing temperatures to fall.
- 1). Open the grill lid, turn all burner dials to lighting position and press the automatic grill igniter to ignite all burners.
- 2). Close the grill lid and turn all burners to high to preheat the grill to desired grilling chamber temperatures. Consult a grilling cookbook or website for recommended grilling times and temperatures based on meat type.
- 3). Reduce burner dials to medium, medium-low or low after preheating achieves the desired grilling temperature. Wait a few minutes to ensure desired temperature is kept constant and adjust dials accordingly.
- 4). Set up the grill for direct or indirect grilling before adding meat to grilling grates.
