- 1). Measure about 4 inches away from the base of the tomato plant. Use your finger to mark the spot in the soil.
- 2). Place the end of the metal stake on the correct spot and pound it in to a depth of at least 6 inches, using your hammer. The stake must be deep enough in the soil to stay in place and support the tomato plant even in inclement weather.
- 3). Cut a length of twine long enough to fit around the tomato plant and stake so the twine is snug, but not tight. Loop the twine around the tomato plant and metal stake, then knot the twine so it stays secure.
