- 1). Dig a hole that is roughly the same size as the container in which your ostrich fern is currently growing. Dig neighboring holes at least 2 feet apart.
- 2). Remove the ostrich fern from its container. Grasp it at its base, turn the container on its side and pull out the plant and attached soil ball. Do not pull too hard. If the plant won't come willingly, simply cut away its temporary plastic container.
- 3). Plant the ostrich fern in the hole. The top of its root ball must be even with or very slightly above the surrounding soil line. Ostrich ferns that are planted too deep will not survive transplantation.
- 4). Soak the planting bed thoroughly with a hose. Keep the soil quite moist at all times, especially during hot or warm weather. Ostrich ferns have no problem growing in standing water.
