Is Helicobacter pylori Eradication Therapy Cost Effective?
Treatment strategies aimed at eradicating Helicobacter pylori have shown positive results in the management of duodenal ulcer disease. However, the therapies used in the eradication of H. pylori are generally more expensive that the more traditional treatments such as antisecretory drugs.
Results from a number of studies suggest that H. pylori eradication therapy is cost effective in patients with confirmed ulcer disease when treatment is discontinued immediately following successful eradication. However, whether this conclusion can be extended to patients treated in general clinical practice, where not all patients will have confirmed disease, remains to be verified.
