- 1). Take the wire out of the spark plug of your lawn mower to prevent the mower from starting up as you remove the blade. The spark plug sticks directly out of the engine with a wire running from its bolt-like shape.
- 2). Put on heavy duty gloves and place the blade against some wood to keep it from moving as you remove it.
- 3). Take off the blade's nut using a wrench. The nut is usually located in the center of the blade. Slip off the blade.
- 4). Place the blade inside a vice and clamp it shut to secure the blade.
- 5). Grind down the edge of the blade using a coarse-toothed file. Hold the file by its handle and move the file in the direction of the edge of the blade.
- 6). Lift the file away from the blade after you've reached the edge and return it to where it started without filing the other way. Spend an equal amount of time on each edge of the blades, which will be a few minutes apiece unless the blade has been damaged. Try not to alter the original shape of the blade.
- 7). Put the blade back in place on your lawn mower and use your wrench to tighten the nut that keeps it secure. Make sure the wings of the blade are facing upward, not downward.
