- Field hockey is similar to ice hockey, except it uses a ball instead of a traditional puck. For kids who love playing field hockey, what could be better than a field hockey party? Whether it is a birthday party or one for the end of the season for your little player's team, planning a themed party helps celebrate the sport of field hockey and encourage a passion for playing it.
- Field hockey players need to be in good shape to perform all their tricks on the field and help their team win. Ask your little sports to pretend they are professional players in training. Give them matching training shirts, and set up an obstacle course with tires, chairs, ropes and playground equipment. Use a stopwatch to record their times. Be sure to provide plenty of water and sports' beverages to fuel the players as they have fun. Ask them to sign each other's shirts with fabric markers before the party is over. The shirts can be keepsakes from the party.
- Ask each child to come dressed in the jersey of their favorite player. As the guests arrive, their picture can be taken with an instant camera. During the party, the pictures can be incorporated into personalized field hockey cards for each child. Set up a game of field hockey in the back yard, so that the kids can practice being their favorite players on the field and off.
- Your child and friends can show the world all they have learned playing a season of field hockey. Before the event, each child should think of the top three do's and don'ts of field hockey. During the party, set up a video camera, and record each child talking about their tips and demonstrating techniques. Compile the video, burn it to DVDs, and send a copy home with each player.
- If you are holding a party following an actual field hockey game, the kids are going to be hungry. Give all the foods a hockey theme. Buns and burgers can be made in the shape of hockey sticks and pucks. Veggie or fruit salads can be made with produce in team colors. The cake can be made in the shape of a hockey stick and artfully decorated with frosting. Cupcakes could be made to look like a hockey stick and puck by inserting a wafer at an angle in each cake. Water and sports drinks should be served as a way to rehydrate the kids as they enjoy a party celebrating all their hard work.
