I spent a night not so long ago at a relatives house on a very nice futon and was very surprised.
I remember futons from college and that was a horrible experience.
The operating system resembled a mouse trap that was yearning to take off as many fingers as possible with one clean motion.
The mattress resembled a pile of dirty laundry and was even worse to try to sleep on.
I had one it lasted one year before I got rid of it.
My friend had one it lasted all four years of college before he burned it.
So after a nice rested night I couldn't help but ask about the futon.
I was told they had it for about five years now and loved it.
It worked out really well as both a couch in the office and an extra bed.
They told me they still had all of their fingers because the new operating systems were a breeze.
After a quick demonstration, I was sold.
I headed out to my local furniture store thinking that all of these new style futons had to be as good as the one I had just spent a night on.
WRONG! Big surprise, I found that old college futon I demised along with a handful of other sub-par products waiting to snatch my fingers from my hand.
I also was quite confused by the multiple price tags hanging in all directions.
The one on the front said one price but upon further investigating I found that was only the frame and the mattress was extra as was shipping if I wanted it delivered.
Not to mention the tax.
They did have two very nice futon frames that I liked and thought were decent quality, but the mattresses were not.
I sat down on what I was told was a very high end ( and EXPENSIVE) spring coil mattress designed after a traditional bed only to quickly find these springs crawling into places they shouldn't.
The other option was a mattress about three inches thick that again resembled a pile of dirty laundry.
I left, went home and made another phone call.
I was told to go check out the Otis brand mattress.
They said they make a futon mattress that was a composite of high density memory foam and wrapped in multiple other layers of cottons and man-made fibers to create the mattress I had slept on.
They also told me they had gone through the same process at the furniture store when they bought the futon for their daughter going to college.
When they found one for her and it turned out to be a good investment they bought one for themselves.
O.
K.
, flat out they finally told me the information I was after.
YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!!! The lesser choices out there are not the best ones.
A good futon will cost more but will be better built and last longer.
If you want to actually sleep on your futon, or if you want to use it as a comfortable couch, you should spend a little extra on the mattress and you will thank yourself later.
Years down the road.
Online seems to work out better for furniture as the warranties are the same from the manufactures and unless you own a truck you are going to pay close to the same delivery fees and wait almost as long to get it.
Online at least for right now you beat the sales taxes.
