Easter can be a special time when you live in the country because you are surrounded by many of the symbols associated with the holiday. From chickens who lay eggs, to bunnies hopping through your fields and yards, there are constant reminders that spring has sprung. Keeping your surroundings in mind can help you come up with the best country-inspired Easter gifts for the special kids in your life. - Anyone who raises chickens knows that their eggs do not usually come out bright white like most of the eggs sold in the grocery store. Instead, most hen eggs come out like naturally colored Easter eggs, in shades of taupe, brown and even blue or green. Collect eggs from your hens or the hens of a friend and boil them. Place dried grass in the bottom of a handwoven basket and then fill with the hard-boiled Easter eggs.
- If you have bunnies in your yard, you might find that from time to time a bunny family comes close to the house. Give your children the gift of adopting a new baby bunny in your yard this Easter. You might try to domesticate a baby bunny, but perhaps a kinder way of adopting a baby bunny would be to put a protected warm shelter outside the house filled with rabbit food. The bunny is sure to come and enjoy the special treats your children provide, along with the warm shelter during the last cool days of spring. Enlist the kids' help in taking photos of the shelter and of their new Easter friend.
- Springtime in the country means that baby chicks are hatching abundantly at the homes of all of those who raise chickens. If you do not yet have chickens, give your kids a chicken coop for Easter and get some extra hatched chicks from a neighbor or friend. Often, hobby or professional chicken farmers have more chicks than they know what to do with each spring. Baby chicks will be the Easter gift that keeps on giving, as your children learn responsibility through caring for them and later on enjoy the eggs they produce.
- One of the benefits of living in the country is the ability to appreciate the onset of spring through working the soil. Easter is in many ways about new life, so teaching your children to plant seeds and raise seedlings can help them to experience this new life in a very tangible way. Collect seeds of various sorts, along with seedlings that are safe to plant in your growing zone. If you do not have them already, your children will also need small gardening tools, along with basic instructions on planting. Gather all the supplies and put them into a large garden basket to be presented to them on Easter morning.
