- 1). Determine whether you meet the requirements to become a security guard in Florida. You must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma. You must also pass a physical exam to demonstrate that you are physically fit.
- 2). Choose the class of license that you want. D class is the common license for security guards in Florida. M or MB is the class of license for people who want to manage a security agency. G class is for security officers who carry a firearm.
- 3). Enroll in a training class. The class for the D license takes 24 hours, and may be taken in one day or spread over three days. You will learn how to write reports, observe activity, prevent accidents and crime, how to use force, legal liabilities, first-aid, and how to suppress fires. The class for the G license takes 28 total hours of classroom training and shooting at a gun range. In addition to the material for the D license, you will also learn how to handle a gun and secure your firearm. Some classes help you with your application and fingerprinting.
- 4). Obtain an application from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services website. On the site, click the tab on the left side of the screen called "Licensing, Permits and Registrations." You can also obtain an application by contacting one of the department's eight regional offices, or by calling the department's Public Inquiry Section at (850) 245-5691. There is no application fee for the D or G class licenses, but there is a $50 fee for the M class license. The application has a tracking number to help you check its status.
- 5). Go to your local police department to be fingerprinted. The fee for fingerprints for the D class license is $45; it's $42 for the G and MB class licenses.
- 6). Pay a renewal fee when your license expires. The renewal fee for the D license is $45; it is $75 for the M or MB and $112 for the G license.
- 7). Obtain a new license if you change your name. There is a $15 fee.
