The causes and effects of Sleep Apnea

Sleep plays a very important role in helping your body rejuvenate and regain its lost energy during the day. Unfortunately, there are disorders that disturb the regular sleep pattern in people. One such sleep disorder is Sleep Apnea. Sleep apnea results in a person's less breathing in his sleep. Though the problem sounds simple, it has a cascading effect on the lifestyle of the person. When gone untreated, it can cause various complications too.

Before looking into what causes sleep apnea, you have to know that there are different types of sleep apnea. The obstructive sleep apnea which is the most frequently seen condition, central sleep apnea which is a less common problem and complex sleep apnea which is a combination of the former and latter are the different forms of the sleep disorder.

The causes for each of them vary and treatment will be based on the category and symptoms of the disorder. The obstructive sleep apnea is seen due to an obstruction in air flow despite the functioning of the respiratory system. In other words, the brain functions as usual by sending the signal to muscles that aide in the respiratory effort and the muscles execute the signal, but the person suffers because of a blockage in the airflow. In central sleep apnea, it is the brain that falters in sending the signal to the muscles because of which there is a lack of respiratory effort.

The condition has far fledged repercussions that affect the day to day functioning. Firstly, a person suffering from sleep apnea will suffer from lack of sleep. Each time the breathing gets disrupted, they are woken up with a jolt to recover from the condition. Hence they are unable to experience deep sleep that helps him get refreshed for the active life during the day. As a result, they will feel sleepier during the day. Also, the oxygen levels in the blood will be altered due to sleep apnea which will keep him inactive.

Lack of sleep has other implications like increased fatigue. The concentration levels also get affected and the person will have problems at the professional front due to this condition. You can also notice that the mind is not sharp enough and the reflexes do not function as before. Usually sleep apnea is reported after a person suffers from this for a very long time. In some cases, the problem may even go unnoticed. In such cases, the lack of treatment leads to other complications like increased blood pressure, increased chances of a stroke, abnormal weight gain. The key is to stay informed and identify the problem at the onset or as early as possible.

There are methods such as Polysomnography and Oxymetry that help in studying the sleep patterns which will also be suggestive of whether or not the problem is present and also its severity. Borderline sleep apnea cases can be treated with just changes in lifestyle while more severe conditions can be attended to with the relevant medical procedures.
