Just as punctuation can sometimes be a problem in mail merge, so can subject/verb agreement. If some of the records contain plural names that are going to be used as a subject while others contain singular names in the same field, you have a dilemma: Do you make the verb singular and edit the records where it the subject is plural or vice versa? If you don?t see an easy solution to this, you should consider your third option:
If you know you will need different verb conjugations for some records and the frequency of the need is great enough to warrant it, simply leave the verb out of the main document and create a field for it in your data source.
Note: This is another reason why many people prefer using Excel in mail merge processes ? it is easy to create fields and fill them in quickly with the fill tool.
