- 1). Check the status of your immigrant petition. Petitioning for a green card must be completed through means of employment, lottery, family, marriage, refugee or other special circumstances. Once the petition is complete, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, USCIS, releases the status of your petition. If the petition is approved, then you begin the waiting game for the immigration number.
- 2). Sign up for the U.S. Department of State "Visa Bulletin," which is issued monthly and allows you to retrieve information regarding how long it will be before you receive your visa immigration number. The bulletin lists the different types of visa applications and the respective dates on which the visa immigration numbers are issued. Because of the volume of green card applications vary and certain laws restrict how many visas are issued annually, the bulletin is updated monthly to give the most current information.
- 3). Use your priory date. The USCIS issues you a priority date. Use this date to check against the "Visa Bulletin" to get an estimate on when your visa immigration number will be issued.
- 4). Check your status online, and check your mail. Once it is close to the date that is listed in the latest issue of the "Visa Bulletin," check your mail and your online status. The USCIS and the Department of Homeland Security notify you of your visa immigration number. You are notified of your visa immigration number, both, online and by mail.
- 1). Check your Green Card. If you need your visa immigration number for a job application or something of that nature, you can retrieve this information by looking at your Green Card, which displays the number on the front of the card.
- 2). Check your online account that you used during the application process.
- 3). Review old paperwork. You can also find your visa immigration number on old paperwork that has been issued by the USCIS or the Department of Homeland Security.
- 4). Call the USCIS or check the USCIS website. If you have lost your green card and all other means of retrieving your visa immigration number, gather the appropriate instructions to file for a replacement green card with the USCIS and the Department of Homeland Security. Once you receive your new green card, get your visa immigration number off of the front of the card.
