- 1). Spray the screws liberally with penetrating lubricant and allow this to soak in for a couple of minutes.
- 2). Grasp the nut on the rusted screw with a pair of pliers. Turn the pliers and the nut counterclockwise.
- 3). Use a hacksaw to cut away the nut on a rusted screw, if you cannot remove the nut with the pliers. Detach the blade from the saw, if needed, to get it squeezed into the spot between the nut and the underside of the toilet bowl. Press the blade firmly against the nut as you saw back and forth. Continue working until the nut falls off the end of the rusted screw. Repeat this process for the other side.
- 4). Clean off the top of the bowl area with a bathroom cleaner. Use a putty knife to scrape away any stubborn bits of rust or lime buildup in the area of the toilet seat screws.
- 5). Align the new toilet seat so it is over the toilet bowl with the screws at the back. Lower the seat until the screws drop through the holes in the back of the bowl.
- 6). Secure the seat from below with new plastic screws.
