Primary Symbols of the Triduum

    Colors

    • Colors have a variety of significance within the Triduum. White is used on Thursday. This represents the Mass of the Lord's Supper. Red is used the next day, Friday, to signify the blood of Jesus when he died. Finally, white is used again to represent Christ's rising. In some ceremonies, white is replaced with gold. These colors may slightly vary from sermon to sermon, but this is the typical combination of colors.

    Bread and Cup of Wine

    • Bread and a cup of wine are both symbols of Holy Thursday. Washing of feet and taking the Eucharist also are important symbols of this day. Both of these themes symbolize that the church is united and that all people are together. It is important on this day, when taking the Eucharist, that real wine and bread are used. This is to celebrate his last supper and the way he multiplied the bread and wine.

    The Cross

    • On Good Friday, the symbol of the cross is important in multiple aspects. In one way, it is a reminder of Christ's death. The cross also symbolizes the entire teachings of Jesus and his resurrection after being crucified. The cross should be a very large one so that the entire church community can see it and show respect.

    Paschal Candle

    • The Paschal Candle is only one of many symbols used on the final Easter vigil. It is the primary symbol of this day. Fire, in general, is a powerful symbol during the Easter vigil. This candle is a large candle and not very many lit candles are used. There may be subtle differences is in the way these ceremonies are carried out. In particular, the length may vary. These vigils sometimes last all night, while some only last a few hours.
