- Apply for quotes from nationally based insurance providers with no presence in your town such as Geico, Progressive or Unitrin Direct. Also contact local agents such as State Farm, Allstate or Liberty Mutual or check with a local broker agency that will shop for a policy on your behalf. Call or visit each provider's website.
- Provide accurate information for an insurance quote. Before requesting a quote, know your vehicle's identification number, year, make and model. Find out the dates of all tickets you've received, the points on your license and the dates of any defensive driver or education course. These courses often qualify for discounts. You'll also supply your driver's license number and the distance you drive annually, decided by your weekly commute to and from work.
- Receive a discount on your policy for any or all of the following reasons: good credit, multiple cars on one policy, a college degree, being married or home ownership. Some insurance companies even discount your policy if you subscribe to a particular magazine. Call to ask if any discounts apply to you and to ensure accurate quoting for your comparisons.
- Compare quotes with the same deductibles, coverage and limits from all companies. All states mandate a minimum liability policy, which only covers damage to other people or property, but some insurance companies consider the coverage to be too low.
You can also compare comprehensive, which covers damage to your vehicle from an act of nature such as hitting a deer or damage from a hail storm, or a collision policy, which covers your vehicle in any type of accident, even if you are at fault. Collision insurance is also known as full coverage.
