Requirements for Pennsylvania Auto Emission Inspection

    Philadelphia Region

    • If you have a 1975-80 model-year car or a 1977-83 light-duty truck, your vehicle must pass an idle inspection (to measure the pollutants your vehicle emits), a Gas Cap test (to check the sealing pressure of your gas cap) and the Visual Anti-Tampering Check of emissions components.

      If you have a 1981-95 model-year car or a 1984-95 light-model truck, your vehicle must pass a Gas Ca Test, Visual Anti-Tampering Check and an emissions inspection when your car is operating under simulated driving conditions.

      If your car is 1996 or newer, it must pass a Gas Cap test as well as an On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) and Maintenance (I/M) check.

    Pittsburgh Region

    • Cars manufactured between 1975 and 1995 must pass the Gas Cap test and Visual Anti-Tampering check. Your vehicle must be inspected for emissions when the car is idling.

    South Central Region

    • Cars manufactured between 1975 and 1995 must pass the Gas Cap test and Visual Anti-Tampering check.

      If your car is 1996 or newer, it must pass a Gas Cap test as well as an On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) and Maintenance (I/M) check.

    Northern Region

    • If your vehicle is model year 1975 or later, it must pass a Gas Cap test and a Visual Anti-Tampering check.

    Other Counties

    • Vehicles in these counties do not need to pass emission inspections.
