Many would say that in a sense, Scandinavian Airlines was destined to succeed. The reason we say this is simply because of the fact that, while their beginnings were humble, they weren't as humble as some others have been over the years. It took a Swedish investor and several small local airlines joining forces to create this airline. The result of this merging of forces brought together assets that empowered the company with extra advantages over competition. Unlike others, they were able to take off fairly quickly in part as a result of these pooled resources, assets and preexisting airline infrastructures. Their beginning was of course, not a fluke, as we can see by their overall success.rnrnIt made sense for the Sweden, Denmark, and Norway to form the consortium that became SAS. The airline was launched in 1946, just one year after WW 2 ended. The whole world was ready to start afresh after the end of the war and the forming of this alliance was the expected result of this new attitude. It only took one month for the newly formed company to begin flight operations. The SAS Consortium was put together as a result of other airlines merging with SAS in the 1950s. After the ownership share amounts were divided and attributed to each country, the individual countries divided their share 50/50 between their government and private investors. One of the biggest keys to a successful airline is brand awareness and marketing prowess. Scandinavian Airlines created a tremendous coup in world wide brand awareness during the mid 1950s. One of the things that happened during this time was a maiden flight over the North Pole to the west coast of the US and a city now known as Los Angeles. Scandinavian airlines branded their worldwide "round the world service" with their flights over the North Pole landing in Los Angeles, California. The destinations serviced by that exact route included Denmark, Alaska and Japan.rnrnMassive changes involving security were the result of the 9/11 attaches and rising terrorist threats around the world. In 2006, the Swedish division of SAS implemented a biometric fingerprint identification system to enlarge and bolster existing security measures. Swedish SAS instituted this particular system to be used within Sweden. To make a positive match between the owner of the luggage use of a biometric systems is employed. The airline makes it very clear that the use of the biometric system is voluntary. rnrnIt is clear that the aggressive acquisition efforts of Scandinavian Airlines has paid off over the years. Scandinavian Airlines was instrumental in the creation of the global Star Alliance group of airlines. To provide extra financial security and to increase the capabilities of each airline the business coalition exists. In the hyper competitive world of air travel and aviation there is strength in numbers. Since the late 90s, SAS has existed as essentially four entities or divisions which include three divisions one of each of Denmark, Sweden an Norway. Finally, there is SAS Global which is the international flight division.
