- Seeds should be started 8 to 10 weeks before the last frost date. Use rich soil and sow seeds 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep in flats or seed pots. Eggplants are susceptible to cold so keep the seeds warm either by heating from the bottom or by covering the containers.
- Eggplant seeds should be kept moist, so water frequently. Since the seeds are planted shallow, either utilize a bottom watering system or mist the top of the soil rather than water directly from the top in order to avoid pushing the seeds too deep into the soil.
- Given proper conditions, eggplant seeds should germinate in 7 to 14 days. This time frame will also depend on the age and condition of the seeds. After germination, seedlings will need 12 to 14 hours of light daily as well as proper fertilization and watering before being transplanted to a pot and eventually to your garden.
