- 1). Lay out the key points or purpose of your PowerPoint presentation before you start the program. Create an outline of what you want to convey above all else.
- 2). Start PowerPoint to open a new blank presentation. Roughly plan out how many actual PowerPoint slides will make up your presentation.
- 3). Select a template or theme if you are inclined to use an existing design that is included in PowerPoint. Use and modify a built-in layout or create a new one from scratch. Change the format of a particular slide by selecting the "Home" table and by clicking "Layout" in the "Slides" group. Choose a new layout to automatically change the slide you're working on.
- 4). Select "Insert" from the menu and scroll down to "Text," or click on the "Click to add text" box. Set up a headline that it is attractive and aids the reader in following your message. Add subtext and bullet points for important information you wish to convey.
- 5). Add slides to your presentation by selecting the "Home" tab. Click on the "New Slide" icon in the "Slide" group. A new title and content slide will automatically be added to your presentation. To duplicate one of your formatted slides, click "Duplicate Selected Slides."
- 6). Select "Insert" from the menu again and scroll down to "Picture, Clip Art, Shape or Table." Make the graphic's size or content support the headline or text you have placed and not detract from it. Use the guideline of "less is more."
- 7). Insert sounds or video to enhance your presentation by selecting "Insert" from the menu then scrolling down to "Movie" or "Sound and Music." Select whether you wish the media to start automatically when the slide transitions, or if you need to click for the media to start while you are speaking.
- 8). Experiment with and use slide transitions, such as "wipes," "blinds" or "wedges." To add a transition effect to a single slide, choose "Select Slide Show," then choose "Slide Transition." When the "Slide Transition Pane" opens, choose from the list of transitions. Check "Auto Preview" to preview the transition between slides to make them exactly as you want them.
- 9). Use animations with your PowerPoint presentation by selecting "Slide Show" and choosing "Animation Schemes." Note the pane that opens and choose animations such as "Fade," "Wipe" or "Fly In." Alternatively, select from the animation schemes classified as "Subtle," "Moderate" and Exciting." Assign an animation to a slide, then select "Apply" or "Apply to All Slides."
