- 1). Cut cattail stalks with a sharp knife when they have just turned brown and are in excellent condition. There may still be some flowers at the very top of the seed head.
- 2). Spray the brown cattail with hairspray or an aerosol lacquer to prevent the seed head from breaking apart. You can opt to hang the cattails upside down in a warm, dry area for twp to three weeks to air-dry if they are not to be used right away.
- 3). Insert a cattail into the back of a fresh or dry floral arrangement. Hold the stem just below the mass of furry brown seeds. Push the reed-like stem down into the foam in the arrangement to secure it in place.
- 4). Add a shorter cattail to the center of the floral arrangement with the top of it pointing outward.
- 5). Add another cattail pointing outward at the left side of the arrangement. Step back to look at the arrangement. Add an odd number of cattails to the arrangement if you feel they are needed.
