Pain Relief Pill Offers Hope to Those Suffering From Neuropathic Conditions

Gabapentin is better known by the brand names Neurontin or Gabarone.
It is a chemical compound that deals with neuropathic ailments (conditions involving pain in the nervous system).
If you ask your doctor what gabapentin is used for, you may be surprised by the answer.
As with most prescription drugs, its usage has evolved as more and more is learned about its positive and negative effects on the body.
Originally, gabapentin was used to help people with epilepsy.
Now it is mainly combined with other drugs to treat a variety of conditions.
What Is Gabapentin Used For? 1.
Partial seizures in epileptics.
Although gabapentin has little effect on severe seizure episodes, it has been proven to help manage milder partial cases.
2.
Peripheral Neuropathy.
This ailment, commonly experienced by diabetics, involves having pain in your extremities (usually just the feet, but can affect the hand as well).
3.
Postherpetic Neuralgia.
An uncomfortable condition associated with shingles, postherpetic neuralgia can be effectively controlled with the proper dose of gabapentin.
4.
Migraine Headaches.
Long time migraine suffers have gotten some much needed relief using this drug, although it doesn't seem to have a lasting effect without maintaining heavy daily doses.
5.
Nystagmus.
This condition deals with irratic movements of the eyes.
Although its not quite clear why it works, gabapentin has been shown to lessen the irregular eye symptoms.
6.
Bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety disorder, obessive compulsive disorder, and insomnia.
Studies so far have provided mixed results when it comes to gabapentin's effectiveness with treating mental and mood disorders.
However, that hasn't stopped doctors from prescribing it for these conditions.
Doctors call using the drug this way "off-label.
" Off-label means using a prescription drug to treat conditions that it wasn't approved for by the FDA.
Even though its perfectly legal to do this, it has drawn much controversy.
If you're inflicted with partial seizures and neuropathic ailments, thenyou may benefit from taking gabapentin (Neurontin).
By talking with a physician and discussing exactly what gabapentin is used for, you may discover that some the pain if you have struggling with can be properly treated.
But be aware of the off-label uses because there's much more research to be done.
