Ear Congestion Relief

    Over-the-Counter Remedies

    • Antihistamines help reduce ear congestion by blocking histamine receptors in your body. According to experts at the Mayo Clinic, these receptors react to allergens that are introduced in the body and cause symptoms such as ear congestion, sneezing, itchy eyes and a runny nose. When taken daily, antihistamines continuously prevent and reduce allergy reactions. Symptoms usually subside within 12 hours after taking the first dose, and maximum results occur within 2 weeks.

    Home Remedies

    • Apply a warm compress on the outside of a congested ear to help reduce inflammation. Do at least 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise to reduce sinus pressure and temporarily restore hearing. For a natural approach, vinegar ear drops may also be helpful. According to "The Parent's Complete Guide to Ear Infections," if your ear congestion is caused by water trapped in the ear, the vinegar will absorb the water and reduce congestion. Place 2 or 3 drops of warm white vinegar into the affected ear and allow it to sit for 15 minutes. According to Ellen Friedman, author of "My Ear Hurts," use a sanitary ear dropper to safely handle the ear drops, and do not let the dropper touch the skin.

    Prescription Medication

    • If your ear congestion is caused by an ear or sinus infection, your doctor will probably prescribe amoxicillin to clear up the infection. Amoxicillin can be taken with or without food, and it is important to take your medication as prescribed, even if your symptoms disappear shortly after beginning your medication. Failure to follow instructions can lead to the infection becoming resistant to the medication. Side effects of amoxicillin include diarrhea, fever, chills and headaches.
