- 1). Wash and dry your mango pit. Use kitchen shears to cut the edge of the pit to remove the seed, which is inside the tough outer shell. Be careful not to damage the seed.
- 2). Remove the seed from the shell and place in a container of water overnight. In the morning, remove the seed and wrap in a damp paper towel.
- 3). Place the damp paper towel into a plastic bag. Open a corner slightly to allow hot air to escape. Place the bag in a sunny window until it sprouts.
- 4). Fill a container with a well-draining potting soil rich in organic matter up to 1 inch below the top rim. Place the mango seed on its side and cover lightly with soil, allowing as much of the sprout to remain above the soil as possible. Water well. Add an additional 1/2 inch of potting soil as the sprout grows.
- 5). Keep the soil moist but not wet. Fertilize monthly with a balanced liquid fertilizer when the sprout is 3 inches tall. Pinch out the top inch of leaves when the sprout is 12 inches tall to encourage branching.
