- Auto mechanics made an average of $18.21 per hour or $37,880 annually as of May 2009, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics occupational employment and wages survey, while bus, truck and diesel engine mechanics made $20 hourly or about $41,950 per year.
- The median wages for auto mechanics were $17.03 an hour or $35,420 per year as of May 2009, while bus, truck and diesel engine specialists made $19.35 hourly or $40,250 yearly. Half of people in these occupations made more than than the median and the rest made less.
- Auto mechanic salaries ranged from less than $20,000 for the lowest-paid 10 per cent to around $60,000 or more for the top-earning tenth percent. Bus, truck and diesel specialists ranged from under $27,000 at the bottom end to more than $60,000 at the top.
- The automotive repair and maintenance industry employed 226,170 auto mechanics at an average salary of $34,820 as of May 2009, while 29,650 bus, truck and diesel engine mechanics working in general freight trucking made $38,070 on average.
- Bus, truck and diesel engine mechanics earned the most in Alaska, where average annual salaries were $56,370. It was also the top state for auto mechanics, who earned an average of $49,370 yearly there.
