Barcoding, as well as RFID technologies are important if not to say critical for the company with extensive Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Distributions operations. If you already have Microsoft Dynamics GP implemented with basic data conversion, user training and reporting, the next step might be Warehouse Management System implementation and integration to Great Plains. We would like to review Warehouse Management System and its key functionalities and recommend you the way for WMS module selection, assuming that you are on Dynamics GP Corporate ERP platform:
1. WMS key functionalities. These are first, Sales Order Fulfillment, second ' Merchandise Restocking and the third ' Inventory Adjustment and Transfer. These functionalities might look like very trivial and you may say, they are already available in Dynamics GP SOP transaction entry, POP Purchase receipt and Inventory transactions (adjustment and site-to-site transfer). Well, this is true, but out-of-the-box Dynamics GP is not geared to support such advanced features of Barcode scanner as Batch mode documents scanning and even scanning multiple lines of the same document, prior to uploading it to the Dynamics GP. You will need Warehouse Management module or the whole application to perform fulfillment/allocation, replenishment and adjustments on the warehouse floor
2. WMS realizations. The first decision in our opinion is Warehouse Management System architecture ' it should be either external standalone WMS or Warehouse Management extensions working directly out of Dynamics GP tables. Both architectures have their advantages and disadvantages (or at least what is advantage to somebody, might be the disadvantage to you and vice versa). For example, external WMS has rich business functionality and is compatible with the majority of Barcode scanners models (plus with major RFID reader brands and models). From the opposite perspective, you may say, that you do not like the idea to pay second time for the functionality in external WMS, as you already paid for it in such Dynamics GP modules as Sales Order Processing, Purchase Order Processing, Inventory Control, Bill of Materials
3. Customer Order tracking on your web customer portal. It is very good idea to enable customer internet self-service. We recommend you to consider first Dynamics GP Business Portal with Order Management module, where such functionality is already available. Business Portal is developed and distributed by Microsoft Business Solutions and it is recommended web platform to deploy. Order Management module looks directly into SOP Sales Transaction tables to report the customer about the order status
4. WMS and custom business logic. As we see the reality of the Supply Chain Management market, customizations are often the necessities. Plus, there is often the case, when custom business logic allows you to gain the competitive advantages and gain or take over additional market share. The important thing here to keep the balance (good comparison is to try to consume only one or two cups of coffee and only one doze of alcohol per day, the rest should be healthy food of proven standard Corporate ERP native business logic)
