Will Bamboo Work for a Privacy Fence in My Back Yard?

Bamboo is a strong and durable fencing option that can last up to 20 years. It can withstand harsh weather, wind and sun. However, it does need care, and treating it with sealer can extend its life.

Bamboo poles are tied together to form a panel or roll. Rolled bamboo is more flexible and can easily be used to curve around corners. Bamboo fencing can be placed over an existing fence or stand alone. For example, a chain link fence does not provide privacy in a back yard. However, you can purchase 8-foot bamboo panels to attach to the chain link fence for increased privacy. Bamboo panels can also be attached to walls or wood fences. If there is no existing fence, place wooden posts in the ground and attach the bamboo panels to the posts.

To install a bamboo fence over an existing chain link fence, first place a wood plank on the ground in front of the fence. Bamboo panels should not touch the ground -- they should be installed at least 1 inch above the ground to protect from rot and moisture. They will deteriorate faster if touching the ground. Place the bamboo panels on the plank and then roll panels flush against the fence. Use galvanized wire to tie the panels to the chain link fence on both the top and bottom.

To install bamboo fence where there is no existing fence, mark off sections the length of the panels and place wooden posts at least 18 inches into the ground. Make sure posts are straight and attach bamboo panels.
