- 1). Select the right tools necessary for your particular model of loft bed. Not all models will use all the tools listed in Things You'll Need, but most will require at least one.
- 2). Remove the guard rails. Though processes vary depending on the manufacturer, most of the time this will require unscrewing a bolt. You may have to hold on to the nut with the pliers or vice grips as you turn the bolt. Set the rails aside.
- 3). Pick up the mattress. Set it aside and out of the way.
- 4). Take off any decorations and other nonstructural features.
- 5). Remove any support rails on the back side of the bed. These are horizontal or diagonal rails that keep the structure stable while assembled.
- 6). Lean the bed frame over so that it lies on its side.
- 7). Locate the bolts that hold the support panels to the bed frame. Remove the bolts on one side of the bed frame. Guide the end piece gently to the floor with your free hand.
- 8). Remove the opposite end piece in the same fashion.
- 9). Disassemble the end pieces, if necessary.
