Fake Christmas plants are perfect for outdoor planters, as they will last throughout the holiday season, and they do not require watering, feeding or pruning. A quick trip to your local craft store is all you will need to fill your outdoor planter with beautiful plants for the holidays. - Purchase some fake poinsettias, polystyrene foam and greenery. Put the foam in the bottom of your planter and stick the stems of the poinsettias into the foam. Use the greenery around the bottom of the stems to cover up the foam. For added decoration, find plastic candy canes or snowmen and glue them to a wood dowel. Push the wood dowels into the foam so the candy canes and snowmen stick up above the poinsettias.
- Create a mistletoe ball for your outdoor planter with several pieces of fake mistletoe, a ball of polystyrene foam that will fit half way in your planter, hot glue and optional miniature Christmas lights. Place the foam ball in your outdoor planter -- half the ball should be inside the planter and the other half should be sticking out of the planter. Take the fake mistletoe and glue it all over the foam ball, covering it completely so you cannot see the foam. Add a strand of miniature Christmas light to the mistletoe for added decoration.
- Fill your outdoor planter with holly topiary for the Christmas season. Holly topiary is available at many craft stores and comes in a variety of sizes and shapes. Depending on the size of your outdoor planter, you can purchase small or large holly topiary. Purchase a piece of polystyrene foam for the bottom of your planter and put the trunk or stem into the foam. You may have to carve out a hole in the foam deep enough to put the trunk in to keep it from falling over. Use hot glue to keep the truck or stem in place. Hang a strand of Christmas lights on the topiary for more decoration.
- Purchase a small, fake artificial Christmas tree to put in your outdoor planter. Put the trunk of the tree into a piece of polystyrene foam in the planter to keep it from falling over. Decorate the Christmas tree with ornaments, lights and fake candy canes.
