- 1). Plant your amaryllis bulbs in the garden in the spring, waiting until the danger of frost has passed. Leave 10 to 12 inches between bulbs. Use a flowering plant fertilizer in the soil and follow the manufacturer's directions for quantity and frequency of use, Dig a hole so that 2/3 of the bulb can be immersed in the dirt, leaving the top 1/3 of the bulb exposed to the air.
- 2). Plant the bulbs indoors in the winter in a pot that is approximately 2 inches larger than the diameter of the bulb, and again immerse the bulb in potting soil so that the top 1/3 is exposed. Keep it in a spot that is bright but does not receive direct sunlight.
- 3). Water the soil until it's damp, but not drenched, and allow the soil to dry out a little between waterings. Do not over-water or the plant could drown. When planting indoors, don't water until the soil is completely dry or until you see green shoots emerging from the bulb. For outdoor planting, water so that the soil remains moist.
- 4). Repeat the cycle of planting and re-planting with the changing seasons to maintain your amaryllis plant all year long.
