- 1). Choose an area that gets at least six hours of direct sunlight each day. Day lilies thrive in sunlight but will do well in partial shade, if necessary.
- 2). Prepare the soil for the lilies, which do best in slightly acidic, well-drained soil. Work into the soil organic material such as compost, manure, rotted leaves or wood chips. A loose, loamy soil rich in nutrients is the goal.
- 3). Space the day lilies to allow a circle of 18 to 24 inches in diameter around each plant. Dig a hole 4 to 6 inches deep for each plant. Place the lily in the hole so the point where the roots and foliage meet (the crown) is ½ to 1 inch below the soil's surface.
- 4). Apply 1 to 4 inches of mulch to retain soil moisture and control weeds. Wood chips, leaves, straw, pine needles and grass clippings are all suitable materials.
- 5). Water the day lilies thoroughly after planting. Deep-soak them at least weekly until the root systems are well established.
