- 1). Open the back of the camera to insert the film. To open the back, pull the knob on the top left of the camera (the knob with the little lever that pops up and then rotates) upward until the back panel clicks open.
- 2). Insert the film canister into the slot, you will have to angle the top in first in securely snap it in place. Once the film can is in, pull the film tail that is sticking out of it until it can reach the other side of the camera. Slide the film tail into a slot on the take-up spool (on the opposite end of where the film can is). Gently push the film on the pick-up spool (with your thumb) until the film perforations (the little squares on the edges of the film) hook into the teeth inside the slot and the film has fully wrapped around the spool in one full turn.
- 3). Close the back of the camera and push down the knob that you pulled up while opening the back panel. Advance the film until it reads frame "1" in the frame viewer (on the top of the camera). To advance the film, pull the advance lever located on the top right hand side of the camera body. After each advance you have to press the shutter button to advance again. Repeat pulling the advance button until the number "1" appears above it.
- 4). Attach a lens (if not already attached), remove the lens cap and set the camera aperture and shutter speed depending on your lighting situation. The aperture is adjusted by rotating the ring nearest to the camera body, with the focal ring (zoom) farthest from the camera. The shutter speed is adjusted by using the round dial on the right hand side on top of the camera body (to the left of the advance lever). Most SLR cameras have light meters built inside the view finder to alert you if you need to adjust your settings. After each shot you take you have to advance the film with the film advance lever.
- 5). Roll the film back into the canister and remove it. Once you have taken all of the shots on the roll of film, press the small button that is located on the bottom of the camera to release the film. Pop up the small lever on top of the winding knob (the same knob that you pulled up to open the camera) but do not pull up. Rotate the knob counter-clockwise to wind the film back into the can. You will know when all the film is back in the canister when there is no more resistance and the lever spins easily.
- 6). Pull up the knob as when opening the back panel to insert the film. Remove the spun film canister and insert a new roll. Take the canister to a photo lab for processing or process by yourself in a darkroom or lab.
