I Don" t Give Her Flowers Any Longer

I live in Fargo, North Dakota with my wife and two children. And there's a reason my wife's been humming the melody from an old classic, "You Don't Bring Me Flowers Anymore", sung by Barbra Streisand and Neil Diamond. It's because I don't bring her flowers anymore. She told me I had to put a stop to it. She stated that with the high price of flowers these days, especially her favorite roses, we had to put our money on more practical things.

She does miss seeing the flower delivery person on those special occasions like her birthday, Mother's Day, and of course Valentine's Day. I have to say, without bragging of course, that I was pretty good at choosing just the right flowers for her. This wasn't just while we were dating either. My gift of flowers to her continued long after our wedding day. The arrangements were always vibrant with her favorite color yellow and had such a lovely fragrance that I know it was difficult for her to give them up.

Then one day I woke up. Even though we live in a climate where we have spring and summer for only about five or six months out of the year, I figured I could still give her a "gift of flowers", but it would just look a bit different than what she had become accustomed to. I would plant a lovely garden with her favorite flowers in it.

Now, how to get such a project started? I had a feeling that unless I could do this affordably, my wife would not be singing a different tune when it came to the expense.

I had never seen myself with a green thumb to this point in my life. I was determined I could learn to grow my own garden, though. I started by planting a flower called the Shasta Daisy. I researched everything I could about this type of flower and with nervousness began planting my garden. Here are the specifics on the flower seed I decided to plant, you need to find out the same information on whatever you decide to plant:

*She has a yellow center (maybe only important to my wife, I admit).
*She grows from early in the spring right through September and is a perennial (that means it grows back on its own each year. That's right; I'm picking up some new vocabulary here).
*She doesn't need a lot of water just in case, as a novice, you forget to water her.
*She only takes a few weeks to start growing.
*She will stay fresh after you've picked her for a big, beautiful bouquet for at least two weeks.

I bet it seems ridiculous for me to talk about these flowers like they are human, but this garden was becoming "my baby".

Before I forget, there are some garden tools you will need before you get started, like a hoe and rake. I got my old, grubby clothes on before I realized a trip to the hardware store was needed before I could "break ground".

The first summer I got my garden going, I spent a lot of time watching those beauties grow. On my wife's birthday, at the end of that first summer, I was able to present her with a beautiful bouquet of daisies. That felt great! I definitely plan to continue this new hobby of mine. It sure is odd how some of the more negative events in each of our lives end up bringing us the most fun and rewarding experiences.
