If you've lived in or have ever visited New York City, you're probably well aware of the plethora of bodegas that stud our streets. And sure, they may provide us with slightly chilled bottles of water on a hot as heck summer day, "aged" chocolate bars that have bloomed (yes, I didn't know this was a real thing until I moved up here), and of course - BODEGA CATS!
But our bodegas are more than that, they also help countless New Yorkers get breakfast on the run. These soggy yet delicious kaiser bun sandwiches, filled with thin bacon, melty kraft singles, and scrambled eggs, cost $3 (and come with a small coffee and sometimes ketchup or hots auce!) and are a staple among us city dwellers.
The trick to making this authentic sandwich at home? Letting the sandwich sit in a tinfoil wrapper in a plastic bag or paper bag for a few minutes. It helps moisten up the bread and everything sort of gets all glued together.
Ingredients
- 1 kaiser bun
- 1 kraft single
- 2 slices of cooked soggy bacon
- 2 eggs
- 2 pat of salted butter
- 1 square of tinfoil
- 1 grocery bag
- Prep Time: 5 minutes
- Cook Time: 5 minutes
- Total Time: 10 minutes
- Yield: 1 sandwich
Preparation
1. Begin by frying the eggs. Crack 2 eggs into a bowl and whisk for 10 seconds - just enough so that they're not completely blended. Melt a little bit of butter in the pan quickly fry the eggs. Set aside.
2. Slice the kaiser bun down the middle and melt a little bit of butter in the man. Add the kaiser bun on top so that the butter can soak up into the bread and crisps up. Now place the kaiser bun in the tinfoil square and add the bacon, the egg, and the cheese.
Top with the other half of the bun and wrap the sandwich in tinfoil. Let sit in a grocery bag for about ten minutes and then serve.
