- Dodge revived their legendary Challenger muscle car nameplate with the introduction of the 2008 Dodge Challenger. For it's first year back on the market, Dodge only offered their two-door grand tourer in SRT8 guise. The 2009 model year saw the roll out of two more trim levels for the Challenger as the R/T and V-6 SE trim levels made their debut.
- The 2009 Challenger SE is equipped with Dodge's naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V-6 engine. This 24-valve SOHC motor has a 3.78-inch bore, 3.19-inch stroke and a compression ratio of 10 to 1. The SE trim level's engine generates 250 hp at 6,400 rpm and 250 ft-lb of torque at 3,800 rpm. The Challenger SE's V-6 engine is exclusively mated to a five-speed automatic transmission with overdrive.
- The Challenger R/T model is powered by a 5.7-liter, Hemi V-8 engine. This naturally aspirated 16-valve OHV motor has a 3.92-inch bore, 3.58-inch stroke and a compression ratio of 10.5 to 1. This motor produces 370 hp at 5,800 rpm and 398 ft-lb of torque at 4,200 rpm when mated to the five-speed automatic transmission, while it produces 375 hp and 404 ft-lb of torque when equipped with the six-speed manual gearbox.
- The Challenger SRT8 is the most powerful trim level of Dodge's muscle car. This model is powered by the 6.1L variant of the Hemi V-8 engine. This 16-valve OHV motor has a 4.06-inch bore, 3.58-inch stroke and a compression ratio of 10.3 to 1. Output for this powerplant is rated at 425 hp at 6,200 rpm and 420 ft-lb of torque at 4,800 rpm. The SRT8 is equipped with the five-speed automatic transmission as standard equipment, with the six-speed manual available as an option.
- All trim levels of the Challenger share the same exterior and interior dimensions. This two-door grand tourer sits on a 116 inch wheelbase with a 63-inch front track and a rear track measuring 63.1 inches. The body of the Challenger has an overall length of 197.7 inches, with a height of 57.1 inches and body width of 75.7 inches. The Dodge Challenger's cabin offers 93.9 cubic feet of passenger volume with a trunk that provides for 16.2 cubic feet of cargo volume. The curb weight of this vehicle ranges from 3,720 lb for the base V-6 SE model to 4,170 lb for the fully optioned 6.1 Hemi V-8 equipped SRT8.
- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's frontal impact crash test yielded five-star ratings for driver and passenger protection, while their rollover test resulted in a four-star rating. The NHTSA's side impact crash test earned the Challenger five-star ratings for front and rear occupant protection.
- The V-6 equipped SE model yields 18 miles per gallon city and 25 mpg highway. The 5.7L V-8 R/T model is rated at 16 mpg city and 23 mpg highway when equipped with the five-speed automatic gearbox, while the six-speed manual model yields 15 mpg city and 23 mpg highway. The 6.1L V-8 equipped SRT8 is rated at 13 mpg city and 18 mpg highway. V-6 variants of the Challenger are outfitted with an 18.5 gallon fuel tank, while the V-8 models have a 19 gallon fuel tank.
