Little kids like to ask the question "What do you want to be when you grow up?" A grown-up version of that question might be "If you knew you would get paid for any work that you did, what kind of work would you choose?" Most of us have an answer to that question, whether it is making fashionable clothes, restoring and selling old cars, helping others invest wisely for the long term, or even manage the financial affairs.
However, many would laugh if someone suggested that we turn that dream into a legitimate home-based business.
We think that such a business requires more time, more money, and more effort than we could possibly give.
In some respects, that is true for all of us.
But time spent pursuing something truly loved will enrich our lives, and, if it is well organized, can transform our lives.
There are many aspects to creating a successful home-based business, but the first step is the most important.
Many people consider that education is the first step, and it is an important one.
But the true first step is to look inside ourselves to see our strengths and weaknesses.
Running a successful home-based business requires discipline, flexibility, persistence, a strong work ethic, and a good sense of humor.
Missing one or two of those qualities should not discourage us from considering a home based business, but should spur us to develop those qualities that need additional attention.
There are several ways to do this.
One way to encourage a strong work ethic is to set up a regular schedule to operate your home based business.
Whether you have started it as a part time venture, or have raised sufficient capital to use it as your primary means of support, it is important to view your time commitment there as rigidly as any other job you have had.
The amount of success the business has is strongly dependent on how seriously you view the time commitment to the work.
Additionally, a home-based business should have a separate working area that is free from distractions.
Parents of smaller children may need to be more flexible in their schedules, or their children's schedules, to carve out several hours of uninterrupted time during the day (or night).
Finally, many home-based businesses are not immediately successful, and so persistence and a sense of humor will keep you moving toward your goal.
A home - based business may be a giant step toward the fulfillment of some of your dreams, and will definitely make you a better person in the process.
As you consider the maze of legitimate business opportunities, do not get caught up in the scam machines that are online.
You will recognize them quickly.
They will promise the moon and will not require effort or financial commitment.
You want to give serious thought to what you are passionate about.
For me that was easy.
