Planning a budget for your decorating should be easy, however, you need to make sure there is room for the unexpected, because the unexpected will happen.
I've been decorating and remodeling my home and have come up with the most important things to think about while planning a budget and how to stay within that budget.
1.
Decide how much you can spend.
You and your spouse need to sit down and take a look at how much you can spend.
When we do this we decided per project or per room.
For instance the latest thing we did was redecorate or son's room, we changed it from a nursery to a toddler's room.
Before that we we chose a project which was the food storage space, this included new shelves and cabinets in the kitchen, a pantry, and shelves in the storage room.
2.
Research Pricing- Before you start deciding exactly what to do you need to research the cost of items.
Make sure that everything you want will fit in the budget, otherwise you need to choose the most important items.
3.
Be Honest- During this whole process you need to be honest, with yourself, your decorator, your spouse, and the retailers you work with.
This is very important because if you are not truthful you will likely spend far more money then you can afford.
Do not feel bad to tell the retail associate that you can't afford the expensive flooring or paint.
4.
Be Realistic- Don't dream and think you are going to purchase items you can not afford.
It's not worth it.
When you are not realistic and think and dream about far too expensive items you will likely spend too much to get them, or not like what you can get and then feel disappointed and dislike the final product.
5.
Save On Everything- I have gotten really good now and making a budget and always being able to come under it or get unplanned items because I had extra near the end.
For instance the toddler room we just did, we budgeted $400 and in the end only spent $200, the rest we decided to through into his college fund.
We did this by saving on paint with Lowe's coupons and getting clearance colors.
We also found the bed at a flea market, bought a mattress on clearance, and the decorations on the walls, I made, bought at thrift stores, flea markets, or consignment shops.
Plus the stuff I made most of the materials I purchased on clearance, sale or with a coupon.
