- There are many disabilities a person can have, and the act defines what is required for a person to be considered disabled. This includes having a birth defect, such as epilepsy or diabetes; becoming disfigured or brain-damaged because of an accident; having a mental illness or developmental problems; or being blind or deaf.
- According to the disability act, the Ontario government must follow guidelines to provide equal opportunities for people with disabilities. All government buildings must be accessible to people with disabilities. Anytime the government purchases a new building, it must renovate the building to be accessible. The government must also use website platforms that will improve the chance of accessibility to people with disabilities. The government will consider the accessibility of all goods and services it purchases for facilities or the public.
- Each year, a ministry must create a plan to remove barriers for people with disabilities. The ministry must consult the Accessibility Directorate of Ontario when preparing the plan. The plan will include the ministry's progress over the past year as well as the plans for the next year. The next year's plans will include a list of "acts, regulations, policies, programs, practices and services" it will review and how progress will be tracked.
- All public transportation systems in Ontario are required to provide a yearly plan to protect individuals with disabilities from being discriminated against. Included in the plan is a list of company practices, policies and bylaws. The company regulations are reviewed and revised by the company and by people with disabilities. The plan will include actions a company has taken and plans to take to ensure those with disabilities can receive full access to services.
- Education and health care are important aspects in a healthy, fulfilling life. The disability act addresses all facilities who provide such services. The act stipulates that each hospital and school must fill out a yearly plan. All facilities must review and revise their policies to make sure people with disabilities are not discriminated against. The plans include all actions a facility has taken in the previous year and the actions they intend to make to remove all barriers for the disabled.
