No one expected it, but somehow Sade has become the queen of the 2011 summer tour schedule. Yes, Taylor Swift may be he princess and we are all well aware that the modern world bends to the whims of preteen girls above all else, but the world bends to the whims of the queen second.
It is easy to simply espouse this as opinion. Sade is has hardly lost her looks and she is out touring to promote her band's (remember, Sade is simply the lead singer) first album in a decade, so there is plenty of opportunity and plenty of natural inclination for exaggeration. This is not one of those cases where nostalgia or hype is the fuel behind the statement.
Rather, Ticket News, a ticket industry website that provides weekly event rankings, has Sade tickets in the number two spot on the list of Top Concert Events and number four on the list of Top Combined Events. Furthermore, BET's Carlos Omar Gardinet wrote the July 19, 2011 article €Sade is the Summer' Hottest Ticket€ that reported Sade's exploits. The Sade Live tour played the Philips Arena in Atlanta on back-to-back nights on July 12th and 13th and sold out the 18,000-seat venue both nights. Up-and-coming star Rihanna also performed in Atlanta that weekend, but only played in a venue that held 6,700.
Sade and Rihanna have been crossing each other's paths quite a bit this summer, as Kristi York Wooten mentions in her Huffington Post article €How Sade Became This Summer's Hottest Concert Tickets.€
Rihanna is just 23 years old and has the misfortune of becoming a celebrity during a recession. It is this recession that forced her to cancel several tour dates a year ago when she ruled the Billboard charts with Rated R. This year, Rihanna is out promoting Loud, her 2011 album and is still finding it difficult to keep up with Sade as they continue to run into each other on the tour schedule.
So what is it exactly that has made Sade the shining star of the prime concert season? Some say it is the devotion her sultry voice has inspired. Others mention that this is first time in a decade she has been out on tour. Could this be a case of absence making the heart grow fonder€¦ and then spending hundreds of dollars on Sade tickets to see her in concert?
Paul McCartney has used a similar strategy in the past few years, playing very few concert dates or just returning to the stage in cities has failed to revisit in years. His concert tickets are ranked third and fifth on those same Ticket News Top Concert Events and Top Combined Events lists respectively. His voice can hardly be called sultry, but his fans devotion cannot be questioned.
No matter what the reason for the sudden explosion in interest in Sade concert tickets, whether it be nostalgia, devotion, or a genius marketing plan a decade in the making, it is undeniable that the R&B group from the UK are putting on one of the best performing tours of the summer.
