It's not often that I come across products that are so bad I feel I have to advise against purchasing them, but from time to time, it does happen. This is a listing of the graphics software programs and related products which I have evaluated but do not recommend. A brief explanation is included noting the primary reasons I feel these products are not worth your time or money. Recent additions are listed first.
Update 7/27/12: All links have been removed from this page as the products are no longer available.
Book: Fast Bytes Digital Photography from Data Becker
Full of errors, missing images, and misinformation. Early on in the book, you are told "On drive C, notice the folder entitled Images" with no prior explanation of how one is supposed to have acquired these images which are used as examples in the book. The programs used in the projects are not provided and you are rarely told which program is being used for the example projects.
Book: Fast Bytes Photoshop 7 from Data Becker
The book is oversimplified and poorly written. Full of errors and misinformation. Projects are juvenile. One chapter is titled, "Retouching Zits, and so forth" Need I say more?
Perfect Photo Printer from Data Becker
The software is not very intuitive or useful. It appears from the box art that it is possible to print several different pictures in different sizes on the same page. However, upon investigating the software, I found that this is not possible without running the pages through the printer in multiple passes.
PhotoFlicks from Data Becker
I actually liked this software very much. It was straightforward and easy to use. But after burning a data CD, the slide show auto-started like it was supposed to, but then it only played music and didn't cycle through the images in the slide show. Same results on two different computers. The Video CD option was not tested.
Presto! Mr. Photo Platinum Edition from NewSoft
Includes Mr. Photo 3.3, DVD Composer 1.0, and Image Folio 4.2. Mr. Photo was so slow as to be virtually unusable. It consumed nearly all of my RAM, which is well over the posted requirements. The package does not do anything that other software doesn't do better. The DVD Composer program wasn't bad, but didn't make up for the deficiencies in the other programs and cannot be purchased alone.
